My thought exactly! Everything Seymour does is for media attention and spin. He was no doubt hoping for aggression at Waitangi. Trouble is Stuff and Threenews totally colluding. ALL just put out a great clip of corruot editing at Waitangi that makes it look like Julia Pooti and others are listening with rapt attention to Seymour. Raw footage shows its Toitu te Tiriti and Chloe Swarbrick they're actually listening to.
No wonder he always looks so smug. He knows his Atlas mates are running cover for him 🙄
Seymour vs Guy Williams. I don’t think Guy was roasted. He obviously hit a nerve with Seymour, and provoked a snarling reaction. He should be very proud of that.
Every comedian is used to heckling. I would have liked to have seen it go further, and one on one.
Seymour would have been very satisfied with the headlines that dominated the news after the 5th. Likewise with Guy Williams. Sadly, there is still a (small) constituency who love seeing Maori get a good bashing and the media go looking for it. Luxon, on the other may have been annoyed that Seymour got more noise than he did. Shane Jones had a good go in his grumpy post lavish lobster party threatening cuts to the Waitangi Trust (which isn't just about the political powhiri one day a year!) I took heart from Chippy's korero and his four days at Waitangi, which hardly got reported at all. I guess the thing for me is you should never be shut up and we need to make our voices louder. Waiting for the uprising in the US!
"Bluntly put, New Zealand relies more than any other OECD country on ministries and ministers second-guessing investment intentions and possible outcomes, and on the most contrived criteria,"
How the heck does he know this? What a bunch of twaddle. And this is a major problem, peoples opinions being taken as fact, being reported as fact with no checks in place. I don't even think that this would be a question that the OECD even bothers to ask when collecting it's data - NZ consistently ranks top in most OECD measures !
Keep up the good work Tui, someone needs to do the digging.
Mr Malpass has also worked for the Centre for Independent Studies, the Australian equivalent of the Business Roundtable/NZ Initiative. Among other 'reports' he wrote there was one slagging off NZ Rail.
Oh MT - what a story…. It just gets worse & worse. I know a number of my friends don’t ‘get’ the horror unfolding before us. Thanks for keeping us well informed.
I’m still here appreciating your work, thanks Tui. Just being a bit quieter as I tread the fine line that exists between keen awareness and the pit of despair ;-). History has a lot to teach us aye. We do need to ensure that we don’t match like for like though, even when it sometimes feels like ‘they’ are winning the propaganda war. I realise my desire to rant outrage, as tempting as it may be, will aid the amplification of ‘their’ voice so instead look to something positive to support as a means of expressing my defiance. It’s an ongoing practice, with inevitable slip ups 😆. We are fortunate to have you here on Substack!
I'm right with you and concuur on every point - including the pits of despair. I did see an edge yesterday - knowing what will happen and then seeing it occur is still depressing at times.
Thanks for being here, I always feel uplifted by your comments and presence KSJ :-)
On the Standard years ago, I said I thought Bryce Edwards had an agenda, and that he "worked" his hypothesis to suit this agenda, often leaving out contrary evidence. He did it well at first and many read him regularly. As soon as Malpass arrived it was obvious he had right wing bias. As for Seymour, he is cunning conniving and has an army of "presenters". We need another book by Nicky Hager to uncover the mucky connections. These few are bad, but they are not the money which is driving this drive to privatisation. Thank you Mountain Tui, once again you show serious manipulation of our press and democracy. Perhaps we need to keep naming Left voices who are reporting well, and also have a clear list of those related to Atlas, and other right wing think tanks.
Good lord, you couldn't write this stuff - Seymour advocating for Polkinghorne. Birds of a feather - both lacking a moral compass. Thankfully there are still some real mean in New Zealand.
Seymour is more of a con ‘n drum type. He would of course support Polkinghorne because rape and murder is not a crime against property, wonder what his fiancé (financé?) thinks …
As for Puke Mallass? A tool, and not just for Atlas
Thankyou again for a great read. Slightly off subject but when Julian Batchelor was doing his best to promote racism, Being a whitey and by default allowed to attend his meetings I decided to infiltrate their inner circle. Their was no planned meeting in Taranaki, I received emails from a number of people about setting up a meeting, obtaining a venue, distributing leaflets. It never eventuated but I did find it odd that all those I had correspondence with were yarpies, funny that
I think the issue is this time the money comes from high above, it feels dense and deep. Most lefties are praying for Winston Peters to flip but I'm not so sure because this election feels much more.........infilitrated and co-ordinated, thanks to their troops on the gound.
Ugh, his girlfriend's commentary on the riff raff coming to Epsom is gross. And stupid. She should just advise her partner, the associate minister for Ed, that they need another school in the area. They've needed one forever but they just want to keep the area exclusive. Everything that's wrong.
Interestingly today, my mother (the right demographic for NACT) was finally put off Seymour by the Polkinghorne letter. Unbelievably it wasn't supporting a paedophile that did it (she still hasn't seen any news on that as a Herald reader and doesn't believe me). I've decided I don't really get this world. A neighbourhood dairy got ruined by a couple of kids and people get apoplectic at the "scum" but happily turn their head away and ignore paedophile supporters. Such a bizarre time to live. 🤷🏻♀️
It can be frustrating for sure - I think maybe if it's someone that looks and sounds like "me", they can put it down to a once off or something exclusionary.
But if there are kids that look or act different, they want to ring their necks because clearly 'they're all scum'. [Sad but a possible explanation for it all]
I followed the Polkinghorne trial and thought that he got away with quite a bit; to hear that a politician was trying to lean on top cops to give the only supect "better" and uneven treatment - despite plenty of evidence to corroborate the suspicions - is near criminal.
Pretty sure if it was anyone else it'd be nearing a subversion charge.
Interesting how much of a hold NZH has on so many - I didn't really realise much about it too until I started deep diving into politics so I guess it makes sense most don't realise either (I mean who's checking the checkers)
Excellent stuff as always MT, thanks...I wondered if you might find the moments to replace future images of Smug-mour in your newsletters with a disrespectful-childish stick drawing (a la https://open.substack.com/pub/sinclairr/p/a-decent-chap). That way, I won't have to interrupt my reading with a little vomit-in-the-mouth each time? 😉
Another good read MTui thank you - what a lot of work. But at "...Malpass has partnered with folks like Bryce Edwards to produce studies ..." the study you linked to was partnered with Bryce Wilkinson (not Edwards). I know from your attention to fact-checking you will want to get this right.

Kirsty that is very interesting! I thought provoking article MT – scary and unsettling – thank you for your work and keep it up?

Me too but seyless scuttled off, Guy would have happily gone more rounds, but seyless is just a coward really

It's bullshit and that's why George Monboit, an investigative journalist for The Guardian, calls these types of think tanks "junk tanks"
These junk tanks are primarily corporate and oligarch funded mouthpieces to further their own goals.
Their strategies are so basic and obvious ... it's a shame that they are now in power.
The Heritage Foundation is just straight up scary.
The same elements are here :-(

and an arrogance about how important he is that is mind blowing

Spot on describing Seymour’s use of media to reach/influence less informed voters

I enjoyed that yarn, thank you John.

Again enjoyed the yarn and a small smile here.

Remembe, was it Maurice Williamson, sacked for seemingly influencing the police? Maybe it was worse?
The Polkinghome trial seem to sadly lacked enough of the right evidence.. I think we all know.

Yes thank you Alfred for checking. I have corrected with a correction at the top. Thank you very much.
Did you mean to write Bryce Wilkinson and not Bryce Edwards?
Hi Jai - I've checked and corrected it, adding a correction at the top of the article.
