That beautiful arc of thinking and considering, which I found so ethical and refreshing made me upgrade to be a fully paid subscriber. It feels important in this age of misinformation and such poor media rigour. Thank you.
I love that beautiful arc too. So well put. Thank you Tui. I love your work. I subscribe. The well researched facts you provide are important to me. I have no issue that your work is open to others. I pay because for now, I still can, and want to support you. I don't pay to exclude others. Please keep up the great work.
I too have just joined the subscriber community because I am looking for ethical, well written analysis of these crazy times we find ourselves in. I also subscribe to Bernard Hickey and find it useful that he has defined his area of focus on politics around housing, poverty and climate change. Maybe define yours so that you're not tempted to bark at every car. You're Great doing great work which I am trying to share.
Yes that's a great idea! Let me think on that one more - there is so much to cover, it can be overwhelming. I saw a "Tweet" on BlueSky the other day where a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist echoed that the US did not have enough journalists to cover the shenanigans in play.
It's the same here - I mentally note topics every day but I can't get to all of them. Thank you for the idea.
3. I wouldn't recommend this 3rd option but FYI a founding subscription is available if you want to be a lifetime subscriber for any amount between $100 - $350 (I believe that's how it works - still learning Substack myself) And that's a once off and covers it for life. The reason I don't recommend it is because you would need to read me for 3-4 years for it to pay off :-)
I appreciate you sharing your thought process out loud. It's really helpful for my own too. I also tend to spend a lot of time researching, analysing and trying to understand things. So the actual output of writing is fairly low compared to the time put in. But it's that very process that makes it 'my work', so to deliver thinking that's authentically mine, that's what it takes. And it wouldn't feel satisfying to me to churn out more, but without that depth of thought or rigour. Quality not quantity. I see a similar desire in your approach to understand the big picture and connect the dots, and communicate that to others. It's doing some heavy lifting on behalf of many. I think that's really important work in these times, keep it up!
Thanks you for your generosity and care for NZers demonstrated by the effort you put into sharing evidence based and well researched information on what is happening in this country and across the world.
I hope you get many more subscribers. Your research thinking and perception are first class. I support four left writers, you and Nick Rockel more than the other two, and after April may be able to make another additional payment.
Patricia - thank you. You already support me. That's already deeply appreciated. I do not want you to subscribe more - you are already very kind. Please keep the funds for you to enjoy.
We all need a break during these times - tea and coffee, a quick break away, food delivery :-) It's important for everyone.
I'm really already touched and your belief and feedback already pays a lot
I truly hope you have a relaxing weekend and away from all this politics - someone reminded me these are long battles, not short ones....so breaks are somewhat essential for all who care deeply in my mind :)
Thanks for that update. Lotsa good thinking..........and I will subscribe once I have recouped a tad from xmas season haemorrhaging (sheesh thats a hard one to spell). Totally support your thinking and work. Tribal we need to be and we are!.
👍🫂 Good thought process - would have been happy whatever you decided as it is YOUR Substack space 💪 Although it is MY space too for learning & sharing in an intelligent & empathetic community 😁💜
As a very new subscriber i am more than happy with your decision. It's wonderful to make a tiny contribution to your thoughful writing. It is needed more than ever today.
The amount of time you are putting in makes sense that you are paid for the work. And you aren't charging that much compared to some. Keep up the good work
I am pleased that my subscription helps in some way to continue your great work. To help financially to enable you to connect with the wider public is the very reason that Im proud to fund your endeavors. You articulate my thoughts and inform me far more than any media funded by an advertising dollar does. Thank you MT
As someone who is also struggling with going paid and what do I offer as a paid option, I appreciated learning a bit about your thinking process. It's helped me make more sense of my own. And as a reader of your substack I appreciate all that you do, you do great work!
Yes I think it's a hard model. I spend a full day quite often on things - hours and hours - and in return there are 1-3 new free subscribers. So even on my primary job satisfaction metric, it's not a great effort. On the payment side, only a few can make it to that level of independence I suspect - and that usually comes with greater press etc. So I'm not fully convinced it's worth it but will see how it goes :-)
Thank you for your kind words, and allow me to subscribe to your publication now!
As long as you enjoy what you do! And I think a lot of it is in the long game, sticking with it and building that confidence with readers. The work you put out is really good and together with the kaka you're my main source of news so definitely don't quit!

Thank you - I really appreciate it. And welcome to the community!
Thank you 🙏
well said........ethical, not a common thang these days ...I agree refreshing.

And welcome and many thanks, Denise!
Since I’m already a subscriber… I’d love to be able to pay it forward and offer a subscription to someone else…. Not sure how to go about that?
Or can I double subscribe?
I so appreciate your work MT.
You are so kind.
Thank you Leigh.
There are a few options:
1. You can gift a subscription to someone else - but not if they're going to fall over with boredom :-)
2. You can channel through Ko-Fi here https://ko-fi.com/mountaintui

Thank you Melanie. I know how hard the behind the scenes work is and really appreciate yours.
