The PM bumbled his way through the interview about NZ's stance on the USA Israel Iran war. He has been criticised right, left and centre - and rightly so. Even M Hooton in the Herald said the PM was a threat to national security. But what gets me is W Peters hasn't been any clearer about NZ's stance but seems to have avoided criticism. He said "you should have asked me first" and that it is a new world, things are different now and Iran had active terror cells all over the world. So what's his/our position? I think he is being disingenuous and continuing his cosy up to Trump. He wants to dazzle us all with enigmatic statements of the "I know best" kind. I hope people don't fall for it.

Winston is as cunning and sly as they come. It's a surprise to me how many accept the glib responses he gives, he is in a beneficial position in that he's not fully assessed and critiqued, but enjoys outsized publicity which he uses to grand-stand and whistle to populist causes.

Unfortunately the polls show that he's been gaining ground heavily over the last year - don't think they've ever been this high.

Winston is looking very smug at the moment & his loyal sidekick henchman is revelling in the publicity his rhetoric is causing. Who actually votes for them now? What sort of NZ do those voters think we will end up with? The world seems to have an awful lot of elderly men who should go home & garden rather than cause the mayhem they do. I have always been a proud NZer but less so now

Mountain Tūī's avatar

They think it will be anti-work world where the "evil" of sexuality and gender can be contained, and safer with a MAGA emulating Winston can protect them from Indians and other outsiders.

It is not just the old men!

Several of my elderly female friends think Winnie talks "commonsense" ....!!!

I have been trying to figure some strategies to persuade them otherwise!! My latest idea is to focus their attention on his side kick who is intent on destroying the environment and has a bit of a dirty past history too - would you really want him to inherit Winnie's position? Then there is the NZ1 cigarette lady who destroyed that world first smoke free bill

Or, if they cant stomach the left leaning parties, maybe TOP (now OP) as an alternative to winnie - I had an interesting discussion with one person this morning who admitted she didn't know much about TOP (OP) but now intends to check them out. OP could swing either right or left, but might produce a possible party the left could call on for support - their policies would slot in with most of the ones of the left.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

I don't know enough about TOP but Natalia Albert who used to be in TOP felt quite ACT like. The new leader is getting air time and their advertising is intelligent.

Winston's a smart talker, so many don't see through the wiles.

Alan's avatar

Perhaps the fact that Ms Albert is no longer involved with the Opportunity Party indicates that her views are not compatible with the party.

I don't see any Libertarian thinking or policy in their published material.

rainbow brute's avatar

Sounds like worthy work you're doing there Liz, kia kaha! You may also be able to draw some connections to the US - a lot of what NZFirst stand for is being played out in the extreme over there, it's just the Peters is *slightly less off-putting

Liz Francis's avatar

Yes, the frequent parallels of what happens there then happens here - and even vice versa - are alarming - sometimes these are "too way out there" to share without the risk that friends just shut down and dismiss one's rants!

"Softly, softly, catchee monkey"!

Not sure how his supporters will feel when we end up putting boots on the ground. Trump seems likely to do so, and will push his allies/sycophants to do the same.

This is great Tui. Timely warnings as well ; There's been a lot of Labouractivity with campaign launches, door knocking for enrolment, phoning etc. But you're right about the voter gerrymandering and huge money for the right. For us, it's little by little fundraiser by fundraiser, and cottage meetings. And vote by vote.

James Wilkes's avatar

The left needs to take a leaf out of Hannah Spencer’s incredible ground game and go hard early. And don’t stop until the votes are cast. Hannah made mince meat out of Reform UK and made Nigel Farage look like the chump he is. And come on, Luxon puts the chump …in chump.

Cheryl Johnstone's avatar

Hopefully this will be the end of him. I hear that even Willis, who unfailingly flys the flag for Luxon,is expressing concern over the poll ( almost certainly thinking of her job) and Luxon has made himself unavailable for any press interviews until Monday. On the other hand if he stays put that is a bonus for the left.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Yes Stuff has already issued articles saying Luxon is "considering his options" and National MPs are not going to like their chances

Frank Macskasy's avatar

Luxon may be waiting for the next TVNZ-Verian poll to come out. Those Verian polls are generally more sympathetic to the Nats and if form follows, and the poll shows National back in the low 30s, he'll live to fight another day.

If not, #DeadManWalking

Personally, I hope he stays on. His bumbling ineptitude will be useful at the coming election. The last thing we need is someone media-saavy and coherent.

Cheryl Johnstone's avatar

The plot thickens!

James Wilkes's avatar

As much as I want to see Luxon go - and boy, do I want to see him go - he is political gold for the left. He is almost single-handedly destroying National. Luxon is so incompetent he is guaranteed to keep shooting his feet off all the way to the election. Maybe it’s the devil we know? Either way, they’re in trouble, but it’s early days and as MT highlights, the right’s war-chest is significant, and so is their appetite for playing very dirty.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Agree - my words from 2024 haven't changed. It would be unlikely he will make it to the election, but boy would I like to see them try.

Yes, yes and yes to all you say James

Cheryl Johnstone's avatar

He won't go James. He is utterly convinced of his own ability. He will not step down.....he listens to nobody and has got Key advising him and telling him how great he is. Talk about arrogance. He must be worried though as he did an unscheduled appearance with Allan on Newstalk ZB. I really hope he stays,he's such a twit it will only get better.

James Wilkes's avatar

I’m with you Cheryl. I’m all stocked up on popcorn. 🍿

James Wilkes's avatar

What an epic failure Luxon has been. Even being objective, it is almost impossible to point to a single thing he has done to make Kiwi’s lives better. He is the penultimate grifter. His ability to fail upwards is unparalleled. John Key, take a f…king bow.

rainbow brute's avatar

💯 Failing up. But wouldn't it be great if he stuck around and kept digging the hole deeper for the right

Frank Macskasy's avatar

*thumbs up*

Finally a little bit of good news, but really Chris H should be miles in front with everything that National and co-horts have done. I have no doubt about Chris H ability or integrity but I want to see some passion. I will vote for him of course (or greens). However I hear so many comments on how he seems so insipid & it puts them off. They are not die hard Labour like myself, there is a awful lot of work to do yet. And just think if they do turf Luxon out and put Bishop or Stanford in?, The money behind National/ACT is huge (I believe this leads to corruption). Personally I hope Luxon digs his toes in, it will give the left a far better chance. No doubt the knives are being sharpened.

Hmmm, just streamed through 1st 30 or so minutes of 6pm News on 1. Not a mention of today’s poll results. The did the same with the People's Inquiry on Pay Equity report days earlier.

I did Watch the start of 3News/Stuff live at 6 pm tonight, and today’s poll result was the lead story, including 5 or more minutes coverage. Similar with the People's Inquiry the other day.

Weird, coincidence, or something else? You be the judge

Gaylene Middleton's avatar

I noticed that as well with TV1 news. Not a poll mention at all.

Winston Moreton's avatar

Exactly "don't forget the voter disenfranchisement laws and NZME's Editorial Direction is still to come!" Trump's dirty tricks worked for him

Tom Semmens's avatar

Is it just me, or does the NZME coverage of this poll look like part of a coordinated attempt to oust Luxon? If it is, who is behind it and who do they want to see as PM instead?

Mountain Tūī's avatar

I remember when they did a big boost of Erica Stanford collectively last year. It was definitely in concert.

Frank Macskasy's avatar

It won't be the first time NZME has covertly tried to change a Party leader.

Who can forget the Donghua Liu Affair, in 2015, where NZ Heral ran a series of stories designed to smear David Cunliffe.

The allegations by Liu were unproven, without any evidence whatsoever and his credibilty was questionable.

A complaint to the Press Council was partially upheld in that the Herald did not attempt to seek corroboration of Liu's allegations.

Plus, there seemed to be close tie's to Cameron Slater's Whaleoil blog.

It was murky, to put it mildly. (The series I wrote was eventually assisted by a professional journalist as we both realised the gravity of the situation.)

It was a NZME "hit job" on Cunliffe and the quickly realised they had been caught out.

PS Thanks for this link too

Frank Macskasy's avatar

And thanks for all your hard yards, MT!

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Yes great points, thanks for that, and yes I personally thought it was very obvious how they conduct themselves, and we see that with all corporate media in effect. WaPo, Fox, Daily Mail, NZME, Stuff etc

👍💯 My bedtime so will just say... Good TREND in polling, but point taken re changes to election law favouring the Nats, but if we can be like voters in the US recently when they perceived Trump was trying to suppress THEIR votes, it motivated them to turn out and turn up. We need to do the same & make it a minus not a plus for their chances to stay in govt 🤗💪
