Hey New Zealand, don’t want to interrupt the whole clean-up thing happening from the latest storm to wreak havoc across the country, but just wanted to disestablish the Ministry for the Environment. Lovely timing.

Brian Rathbone's avatar

Yeah Luke, this is friggin unbelievable.

Damn, it’s too early to pour one MT.

Wow, think about what that weapons-grade stupidity promises to deliver. And it’s nothing good. Translated, it means the clowns in the clown-fuckery coalition can see there is a train coming straight towards them, but for the sake of sucking up to their vested interests, they’ve chosen to stand right there on the track anyway and take one for capitalism. Why? Profit and growth, reward and ambition, power and glory. Their short-term thinking is mesmerising. They are so mind-numbingly deranged by ideology, their obfuscation of the evidence has become ‘normalised’. It is completely expected and totally on brand.

They are unserious, reckless, dangerous, selfish, and greedy people. And we-the-people will pay the bill, in lives and money, not them or their donors. We will cop a levy / tax or whatever to pay for the perpetual cleanups. The tax will be coded as an investment in our secured futures. Luxon will even present it on a rainy day beneath an umbrella being held over him by Bishop, who will be holding a dagger in the other hand, whilst his eyes remain locked on Luxon’s shoulder blades. Bishop will be grimacing like a hyena.

I mean, queue Johnny Cash’s ‘Folsom Blues’ and sing, “I hear the train a comin’, it’s rollin’ round the bend” for solace or select ‘Ring of Fire’ and pretend the ring of fire is Luxon self-immolating in a passionate affair with his scrambled brain as he seeks to destroy our environment. Honestly, I find their blatant ignorance infuriating to infinity and beyond.

At least the dinosaurs didn’t know what was coming. We’re getting an advanced screening of impending disaster. The problem is, these self-gaslighting schmucks aren’t doing anything with the advanced warning they have. Luxon’s consummate clown-show cabinet is nothing more than the past masquerading as a window into the future, and they have their facts completely upside down….on purpose. They know what they’re doing is dead wrong, but they’re doing it anyway. Tell me that’s democratic. Please, Mother Nature, use your lightening, you know what to do, get it done.

James, you’ve expressed everything I needed to so thank you 🙏

I played blues songs alongside teenagers and adults and tangata whaiora (persons seeking wellness) in mental health spaces. This song being sung by this coalition of feckless fools however has no healing attached to it; no aroha; no care or respect; and no dignity.

Such is the unbelievable arrogance and stupidity of those pretending to govern.

This CoC anger me beyond belief.

I’m with you John with bells and whistles.

Really miss James Shaw and his wisdom.

You knew that what he said would be backed up by proof and worth reading.

Wonder what he thinks of all that this Govt has undone, he took pride in achieving many things over his few years in politics and much is now gone.

Thanks for you piece today

I have a lot of respect for Shaw.

You’re very welcome.

I wonder how much notice the government takes of the Commissioner for the Environment, an Officers of Parliament position. They assiduously produce all kinds of interesting research, and occasionally, Simon Upton (the Commissioner) says something, but generally, I think they are ignored. I just don't think the government and those of their ilk give a stuff about our country. It's power today that matters. Our little islands will be radically changed (and are already) with sea level increases and coastal erosion. Parts of Aotearoa will disappear forever or become unliveable (as we are already seeing). Meanwhile, the farmers will go we're the backbone of the economy as their paddocks disappear under floods or polluted water - and they demand the rest of us pay for it.

Thanks for the ammo Tui. On its way to the red neck rellies

Great (and so worrying) post

They already know what they don't want us to know - and disestablishing the Ministry for the Environment (BTW one of the first things Trump did) is another way they can try to control the narrative and continue to ravage the earth for profit without having to deal with criticism or actual evidence. They will do anything to prevent even the slowing of the BS coming out of the beehive almost as fast as the stuff coming out of long pipe (or is it the short pipe?) today.

Why ignore advice when you can just as easily silence it.

Despite the signs and the red stickers there were people walking their dogs on Lyall Bay beach this morning and it's only a matter of time (and weather) before (some of) the surfers come back - and despite the signs and the red flags there will be people still voting for this proudly racist and ignorant bunch of goniffs.

Never been such a morally bankrupt government in NZ. Keep up the good work MT.

Jane's avatar

Thanks Tui, this is soi bloody obvious 🙄

Mountain Tūī's avatar

We know the plan. They will do this and if Labour gets in power and wants to reverse it, Taxpayers Union will do their stupid campaigns saying the government is wasting money ad nauseum, while ignoring this government throwing away billions to fossil fuel and tobacco.

Their plays are as predictable as they are cheap

What's next? The EPA?

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Why not? They've already cut funding to NIWA and science, sidelined Climate Commission and all the rest.

This is just a Trump lite pro-forma

Phil Malpas's avatar

But I have a personal assurance from the present government that events like the most recent will never happen again!???

Winston Moreton's avatar

.

.

Let's acknowledge here that NZ has surplus hydro electricity already.

NZ does not need imported solar panels or windmills. We certainly do not need to import fossil fuel

Summerhaze's avatar

I agree. Who is gaining from this? Not us, never us.

Winston Moreton's avatar

The owners (including the government of all stripes -and who also collect GST on electricity sales - are all so locked in. . And the assets are now overseas owned and controlled. Capus International Limited . No way could a government afford to give up that amount of GST. It's why NZF backed off

Water will be the new gold in the not too distant future, I found this from July last year, https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/07/23/overseas-investment-changes-to-undo-water-bottling-safeguard/ Was this passed?, ( probably under urgency). No doubt a lot of lobbying from the Beverage Council, they say in their blurb "unlike other beverages, water is also not a high value product", I don't get that, it dam well should be?

I see AI says NZ known for its pure water ( yeah right).

As for disestablishing Ministry of Environment (criminal) and COC attitude to climate change, all I can see is heads in the sand. However the top 1% will be safe in their fortresses and f everyone else.

I like Chris Hipkins but he needs to get more mongrel & stop sitting on the fence or the current pack of b...... will get back in and do so much damage its going to be hard to ever fix.

Just wanted to let you know MT your work is so important in giving us the facts and therefore the knowledge to counter the fuckwittery out there

This government has no interest in renewable energy for the simple reason that they make a shitload of money from it. Because of this environmental concerns are not to be discussed, a cunning way to do this is absorb the ministry of the environment into 1 mega ministry.

Why support communities to generate their own energy when you can screw the plebs with extortionate prices and the shareholders are laughing all the way to the bank.

Nationalization is the only answer to stop this robbery.

Fuck I hate this government
