A good point here:

Today's homelessness / begging law change functions as a convenient trojan horse for more general dispersal orders and facial recognition systems. It can also work to ensure homeless cannot vote

"Police data shows public order, health and safety offence proceedings in Auckland City were at a 10-year low in 2025, with just 39 proceedings in December 2025 compared to 168 in December 2015. Nationwide, there were 428 public order, health and safety offence proceedings in December 2025, compared to 1663 in December 2015." So where's the problem? Oh I know, National are falling in the polls so had to announce something to get attention. Never mind that their venal, cynical ploy actually affects real people. Did Simeon go to church before the announcement and hear about how Jesus's mission was supporting the poor.? Even I know that, though I'm not a Christian, but Buddhism says the same thing. These hypocrites.

Jesus would be so pissed he would take a swing at Simeon and Goldsmith and all of the other faux Christians in the National party. They are a complete joke.

🎯 Totally despicable 🤬

Very well said Darien!

Judith Paulin's avatar

I totally agree, Darien! I visited London for the first time at Christmas 89/90 and as a kiwi I was shocked to see people sleeping on the pavements and Regent Street on Christmas Eve – it was cold and these people were sleeping under cardboard sheets in shopped doorways and the wonderful Salvation Army were giving out soup, hot cups of tea etc. I congratulated myself at the time, thinking that could never happen in New Zealand…

Luxon and the Taliban punching down on those with absolutely nothing. They are cruel, gutless, mongrels. I’m going to stop writing here because I am incensed. And frankly, what could I write? New Zealand is going backwards fast.

I will add homelessness is a human rights abuse. The United Nations states, “Homelessness has emerged as a global human rights violation even in States that have adequate resources to address it. It has, however, been largely insulated from human rights accountability, and rarely been addressed as a human rights violation requiring positive measures by States to prevent and eliminate it.”

🤬 I'm with you 💯% - angry doesn't begin to cover it 😵‍💫

I’m so pleased Viv Beck said “total solution”, not “final solution”…. Well, not yet anyway.

Is Paul Goldsmith related to Don Brash? They almost seem like twins to me.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

He considers Brash a friend and previously defended Brash

He also wrote a sycophantic biography for Alan Gibbs, ACT Godfather

Ange Boland's avatar

Thanks Tui. That explains a lot!

Mountain Tūī's avatar

You're welcome, Ange:

In case you want to learn more, he also omitted a few billions from the National Party budget when he was looking after the Finance portfolio

This government just seems to stoop lower and lower. How the hell is this going to improve the economy, besides Police are already under pressure and where are they 'removing' these people to, prison?, as how the hell can they pay a fine (and why should they even be fined in the first place). Surprised the coalition not suffocating from all the sand. I've really been trying not the use the F word but its really hard not to. Kindness & compassion certainly left this country along with Jacinda.

This is typical of the type of heartless and callous treatment being dished out to those unfortunate people who find themselves homeless on the street or living in cars for a variety of reasons including as a result of the policies of this Government. Instead of wielding a big stick why not try and get these people help and accommodation.

See below the video link of Luxon recorded 6th November 2025 promising nobody would be moved on from the CBD without having nowhere to go.

However this promise already seems to have been breached with the new legislation not guaranteeing immediate, alternative safe accommodation before someone is moved. Police will determine on a case-by-case basis if support services are needed.

Breaching a move-on order can result in a maximum fine of $2,000 or up to three months in prison. It has now become obvious why all these new prison beds are required, as anyone who is homeless certainly won't be able to front up with spare cash for a maximum fine!

Still the new policy will appease all those who lobbied for change.

Note: Auckland Council confirms the govt reduced social housing accommodation in Auckland from 890 places to 39 in one year, and cut emergency housing grants by 70-80% ($20m). Since then, individuals rough sleeping in our city have increased by 100%

But, but, according to Gold, give him the middle finger Smith it is local government's fault and they need to find, and pay for the solutions. Yet, according to Lux, con a Ton of people, let’s cap rates, and sooooo much spending going to sooooo many worthy causes it makes you weep. Will someone think of the Epsomnites, and other worthies paying those heartless Auckland rates. Oh dear Cruety Gang, can you get your stories straight on who to blame?

Frank Macskasy's avatar

When you read the two Beehive media eleases today, you realise pretty quickly that this policy makes little sense.. until it's put into context of election year. This is pure desperation from this useless govt.

(Blogpost tomorrow.)

Mountain Tūī's avatar

I notice Stuff had an article today practically verbatim quoting these dishonest National Party Ministers. Unsurprisingly in that unofficial poll, most people supported this dishonest Government's actions

Leonie's avatar

Not answering the question Goldsmith; where do these people go? You need to provide somewhere.

That sort of Mango Mussolini 🐂 💩 from National is bound to shore up their votes 😂😂😂

Robin Capper's avatar

So don't fix a problem, just move the 'bottom feeders' (their term) out of their sight.

Christine Hayvice's avatar

How bloody awful.

This is all about our newly flourishing prison industrial complex.

The government has spent astronomical amounts of money on increasing prison capacities(minus the rehab services) but no money for housing.

We can see it from a mile away!

Cindy's avatar

🎯 BUT in the long run it is cheaper to build houses & have people support themselves out in society (and pay taxes!) than to house people in prison - & that's without the long term cost of perpetuating criminality by association🤷🏻‍♀️ But this lot have shown that recognising facts & economic reality are not in their skill set 🤢 💩

Vanessa York's avatar

I expect that more private prisons will be forthcoming.

Classic play stupid games win stupid prizes… clean up the streets by sweeping people into more legal jeopardy and (garnishing your future )cash prizes and free accommodations. Roll on up for our society of captives! (IYKYK)

This is absolutely heartbreaking. A $2000 fine? Well obviously that's not aimed at the homeless, if they had $2000 they almost certainly wouldn't be homeless.....it's aimed at protesters. We were recently in Sydney, and they don't seem to have a problem with the homeless begging or living on the street in the CBD, why do we? Is it because they look very untidy and out of sight out of mind?

Jendr's avatar

Heartbreaking indeed Cheryl. Don't be surprised if the fine component of this shitfuckery is intended as a mechanism to funnel people directly to prison.

Goldsmith's remark that people will be moved on and on and on 'until they learn ...' is a measure of the man. What a callous prig. When so many living on the streets have profound health issues - physical, psychological, emotional, and nervous systems that are permanently in a state of high alert, what exactly is this lesson you speak of Mister?

In the last week or so lots of brand new pup tents have appeared around this town. Somewhere to contain a person's meagre belongings out of sight ... kind of. Trouble is a tent pitched at the edge of a commercial carpark draws attention for being what Mary Douglas called 'matter out of place'. Coincidently this very weekend marked the biggest event on the local calendar with thousands coming from far and wide to have fun, play dress ups and partake in the glamour of a bygone era. Fancy that ...

So the next hikoi will be illegal???!!!!

It gives them wider discretion, but anything called public disorder would classify, so a gray area
