$250mn in emergency housing "savings" a year under National, while government increases corrections budget to ~$2b a year, and will surpass NZ's ”moral and fiscal prison failure prison rate” by 2026
Very interesting comment by Marilyn Waring but a not surprising one. Luxon behaving just as a CEO would.
I will say it until I'm blue in the face.......prison does NOT work. It is a training school, a recruitment center and a badge of honour. At best it will provide food and a bed for a few that will offend to get them.
I'd wager good CEOs don't act like him - he's just a meddling, thin skinned middle manager who, as he told Newstalk ZB, "faked it till he made it".
As to prison, yes the criminologists and research all agree with you - there's a reason that the world's highest incarceration state in the world corresponds with some of the world's most violent and persistent crime rates (USA)
Luxon, spewing his vile and cruelty all over New Zealanders again. If I could take him out the back and give him a bloody good hiding I would. Luxon is a nasty little bully and a case study of narcissistic malignancy. The sooner he is gone from New Zealanders lives the better off everyone will be. Worst of all, he isn’t very bright and that’s rubbing salt into an open wound, because how did a jumped up deodorant salesman become the nation’s Prime Minister? I mean mercy, mercy me. Of course, he is also a living breathing example of everything that isn’t working. What a horrible human being. His legacy: cruelty.
I do believe so, James, I do believe so...and this lot are testament to it. As someone on Youtube commented, look at the National MPs laughing and squawking at policies that put kids' lives at risk:
Act are taking full advantage of the weak, "middle of the road" (as so many believe) National. It does make me wonder if Act weren't somehow involved in these particular Nat mp's standing for parliament! They are proving a perfect cloak for Act's plans.
Thanks. I have just watched this and I hate the way Bishop falls back on 'common sense' and 'Kiwis would agree with us'. Neither of those are valid arguments.
I personally think he's one of the worst on their bench - and as nefarious as Seymour. Unsurprised by the "quality" of their arguments. They have little in their midst.
My sentiment entirely James. I knew he was rotten to the core when he turned on the drug rehab program for the Mob here in Hawkes Bay. A vote grubber through & through.
Not very bright and very insecure about that. Al he can doi is repeat himself and blather, compared with Hipkins who actually seems to read and think, and has facts and figures ready to support answers.
Maybe he likely doesn’t allow questions in caucus because he can rarely answer the questions unless he can sprout one his learned word salads. They rarely provide an adequate answer to the question.
The caucus may get sick of those the same as we do. And because you are all stupid and I’m the PM…. “Let me be clear….” What an inadequate man he is in this role!!
Shocking about that new prison. They figure it will be full of 500 prisoners next year. What’s that likelihood most will be Māori! I just watched that doco Stolen Children. Makes you weep. They get put on the conveyer belt to prison from very young.
That video, so well put together. If there were an open public TV channel for snippets like this to convey what folks need to pay attention to . . .
Okay, the next point: it's clear that questions in the House are going to be shut down with this kind of evasive nonsense (so not a lot of point 'contacting your MP' in that old fashioned way. And anyway, your MP may be NACT/NZF)). Submissions are read by AI and clearly their content is completely ignored. Protesting on the streets - while a great outlet for outrage - hardly seems to raise an eyebrow. Expert groups write reports and letters of protest that are not considered. (Though I'm noting that taking things to court has been able to shift a few things.)
But all in all, how do we get back to notions of exercising democracy in Aotearoa during parliamentary terms?
I don't want to blow up the Beehive, it's not good for the climate.
It is pretty exhausting, but we all can keep doing whatever to undermine the NActNZ1 hold over people's thinking. Think of the difference if each of us is instrumental in persuading just one other person not to vote for this lot again!
To unseat them in 2026 is vital. And to note areas to flag, and where their own actions may swing it for all eyes. Tui collects them, let us all do the same. Look for the UNCAC report due sometime soon on corruption, fed by TINZ's report, could be scathing. Yeah, the government can rubbish the UN but it's tricky. The impact on govt funds of this crazy refund of over 25% on new assets (including for oil and mineral extraction for overseas investors moving in), when the bill gets to $10 billion, though this would be terrible for a future govt to undo. NZ losing free trade agreements by not complying with international law. The sight of people literally freezing in the streets. Is there a point where visible evidence swings opinion? I think it must. Though will NZME showcase all of this? Hah! You're right Tui, to have all of this and more known openly is so very very important.
Even a single unhoused person is a shame on our society. It's getting pretty hard for even the infamous median voter not to notice how bad things are - they only need to go into the center of one of our major cities. I don't think I've been approached for money with greater frequency any time since I lived in New York City in the early 90s.
We keep hearing about the Health funding overspend or deficit but we never hear about a Corrections one. So are Corrections just better at managing their money or something? Maybe Corrections should manage health.
It's frightening to see where this is heading. I've been watching footage of tent cities in America where the homeless eke out an existence. That's where we're going, and already have them in Aotearoa. Here, where we once led the world in social justice.
I remember a time when being unhoused was almost rare. It was getting worse and worse and some were trying to fix it, now it has exploded. In this land of plenty.
Thank you for the facts and clips. You work hard for us.
🙏

You cant run a country like a company. Companies choose their customers and ignore the rest. Government shouldn't do that.
That’s exactly what this government is doing, if you swap ‘donors’ for customers…
So grateful for your dedication and work ethic Tui. This information is very illuminating and extremely tragic.

The only thing I'd add is it's his whole Caucus - especially the likes of Chris Bishop, Simeon Brown, Nicola Willis, Paul Goldsmith etc.
Does nasty attract nasty MT because it’s quite the role call isn’t it?

Paul Goldsmith and Chris Bishop are pretty much ACT politicians wearing blue

Stand in line!

Yes, a stark difference

So true he can never adequately explain anything and has no real reasons other than it appears it was Mike Hoskings suggestion

Yes, and don't care about it. More to victimise them with and point fingers really.

Nothing in our systems allows anything to be done in this term, and there is a long way ahead yet.
It is pretty exhausting, but we all can keep doing whatever to undermine the NActNZ1 hold over people's thinking. Think of the difference if each of us is instrumental in persuading just one other person not to vote for this lot again!
I'm working hard at that - it's the only thing that makes sense at the moment.
Your hard work helps us keep going when we get bogged with what we are facing - thankyou.

Yes ..

Last year, Luxon said in an unreported media conference, that when it came to corrections, there is effectively zero fiscal constraints.
Health on the other hand, he said, was not even allowed to go $1 over budget - the underfunded budget.
How sad is that eh!! And very poor governance. .
A glance at Norway should at least pique curiosity, rather than saddling us to huge prisons.
It’s all just private investors dictating their agenda!
So is Corrections failing section 4 of the SOE act - failure to return a profit? Wicked!
It's frightening to see where this is heading. I've been watching footage of tent cities in America where the homeless eke out an existence. That's where we're going, and already have them in Aotearoa. Here, where we once led the world in social justice.
💯This
Thanks so much for your great work Tui! It helps.
