Hi MT ; this is all highly dodgy. The MOJ NZCVS report on crime differs so much from the Police stats. There's a whole lot of crimes in the NZCVS that aren't even categorised. I am sure I am like everyone else who has noticed the increase in reports on gun violence while meantime, the gun lady Nicole McKee's bill is going through the parliamentary process. .As you point out, the police instructions to downgrade family violence as a priority means there are a whole lot of statistics this government's boast just ignores. Desperate, desperate, politics.

I saw some media pundits throw National's numbers and press release out without context too.

We not only have a dishonest government, we have so called journalists who care more for their popularity and firm's revenue, than contextual reporting

Hi MT,

it is NO coincidence that these metrics are increasing at the same time as homelessness & child poverty.

Some Kiwis are so blinded by prejudice, they can't see this connection.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

100% Any blind Freddy could see this coming, but no apparently not.

On the right wing X their people are being stirred up to anger at NZ not licking National’s feet for their baloney announcements.

Well, at least the gangs demonstrate they have a coherent recruitment plan. And they’re lightyears in front of this incompetent government. Apparently, the pay and conditions are quite good too. Just weighing my options in a country that is now being ranked with Bulgaria for living standards by the IMF. 🤔

Cindy's avatar

😁 Great minds & all that 🤷 I replied to MT's Note with the same idea 🤔

I could retrain as a tattooist. Finally, an artistic pursuit.

That was a hard read. How have they managed to get it so wrong.

thank you for your Mahi. It beggars' belief ,what inaptitude you have to deal with .

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Thanks, I just read that 5 student kids & patrollers have been hit by cars this term alone and 1 died.

I am usually able to contain my emotions when I research and report, but that one made me livid.

There are so many hard things to absorb with this government because of the maliciousness of intent and focus on PR above reality - it's going to be really hard to come back from it too when you combine it with how much disinformation is going out to the right

Leonie's avatar

I am livid too. As an ex Nurse Manager of an Orthopaedic ward, I know just what damage speed does, not only to the individuals & whanau but also to our Health System, ACC.. the costs are mind blowing! All because of people’s egos about how fast they should be allowed to go.

Our Health Minister is a disgrace!

There is absolutely no way that violent crime has dropped. It is a well known fact that when joblessness, poverty, homelessness, cost of living etc etc rises, violent crime rises too. I do not believe it,the numbers have been fudged.

Cindy's avatar

👍💯🤷

Colly66's avatar

I am also positive they are fudged, we hear of a murder every day - maybe if its gang related it not being included?, who would know with this lot.

Health professionals quite in response could be quit or quiet. Either way all professions, including Police, are being welcomed into Australia where the dollar is so much better than ours.

Mountain Tūī's avatar

I corrected it I think - it was quit

Thanks Winston and agree - National won a dispute arbitration with police in 2024, and cut their water coolers etc sparking more of an exodus - while handing out billions to landlords and tobacco companies overseas

Just a dumb government

Vanessa York's avatar

A government that considers law and order a top priority should treat its police force far better than this one does. They’re constantly giving them more to do - eg enforce no patches, be seen ‘walking the beat’, roadside drug testing, move on the homeless etc - but won’t improve pay or conditions, or even listen to their advice. They’re treated even more shabbily than teachers, imho.

Mark Mitchell should be taking recruitment tips from the mongrel mob

🤔 Salient point that it is REPORTED violent crime, not ACTUAL violent crime. As has always been the case, if people think nothing will be done if they report something, then they increasingly just don't bother 🤦 Proven with burglary & theft related crime over the past when people reported & Police didn't/couldn't follow up - tell your friends & whanau not to bother eh 🤷

And OF COURSE gang membership is likely to grow when unemployment in "normal" jobs is high, + imprisoning people introduces them to gang members they might not otherwise encounter, & the drugs-gangs-drugs circle is historically non-challenged reality (which also relates back to unemployment because hopeless, helpless people turn to drugs then get caught up in gangs & lawlessness to earn money to buy drugs 🔁🔁🔁🔁) 👿

🤦 These so-called "leaders" are either stupid or deliberately obtuse - or a third & most likely option... they don't CARE about real everyday people behind their manipulated statistics 😢🤬

Leonie's avatar

Well said Cindy. Helpless, hopeless, and likely homeless.

Winston Moreton's avatar

A dumb government being manipulated by their confidants who live in Hawaii and Peters watering hole the US embassy. NZ Governments, including Labour, forget who put them in office, the minute the lobbyists have their ear. Lower ranked new MPs are bound by Party solidarity rules and can only resign when things turn sour

JS's avatar

I'm going to hyperfocus on that line on the graph where Nats may start claiming the gang growth is now slowing..... I posit that it's due to the gangs running out of interested people to recruit. /s

Martin Garrood's avatar

I agree - very like NZ citizens leaving NZ is slowing, because those that can leave, have mostly all left already! After all, if everyone had left then the number leaving the following week would be ZERO - National would still probably celebrate that as a successful slowing down of emigration

JS's avatar

But the Dow Jones is up.

I had some idiot on beach where I walk say he thought Luxon doing a great job - I just had to say you have to be F.. ing joking. I then said you must listen to Mike Hosking in the morning and walked off - haven't talked since, its going to be a long run up to the election. I know I have to respect other peoples views, but really struggling with that. People just not reading or don't know how to access great journalism like MT.

Martin Garrood's avatar

Please, please, please Mountain Tui can you try to ALWAYS post a link next to the excellent charts you show from various sources so we can easily copy and paste them into other social media platforms to refute the nonsense that Coalition party supporters keep saying - the gang numbers vs police numbers chart and the violent crime bar charts are excellent

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Yes I can do that Martin

Martin Garrood's avatar

Thank you - if you could go back and add the links to those two existing excellent charts in your report that would be awesome - only some social media pages let me add a picture or snip and I have decided I personally must counter all disinformation in NZ on Social Media!!!!

Mountain Tūī's avatar

Hmm The multi-coloured one does link to the Ministry of Justice website already but I added "Ministry of Justice" to make it more conspicuous.

Do you want to check if that fits, Martin?

I'll also add another image too

Martin Garrood's avatar

I think it is all great - keep up the great work Mountain Tui- we need to counter the spin, propaganda, and full on lies they are pumping out every single day
