It’s 2023, and National have won the most votes in the New Zealand election. Their long cultivated coalition with ACT is assured, and to the chagrin of Christopher Luxon and David Seymour, their respective party leaders, they will have to invite NZ First along for the ride.

Government party negotiations however, are taking forever, or what seems like forever. One month after the election, reports are filtering out that the two minor parties are playing Luxon off each other, even as Luxon tells New Zealanders that he’s a seasoned negotiator (a claim later poo-pooed by right wing commentators, who also call Luxon an “imbecile”)

David Seymour tells news cameras at the time that it’d be nice to be Deputy PM and advocates for himself publicly, telling Kiwis his skills would come in handy. What stood out to me was seeing this politician, who I did not know well at the time, tell Kiwis that he wasn’t out for the “baubles” of office, no, he claimed: everything ultimately was about doing “better for Kiwis.”

As history would have it, Seymour did obtain the Deputy PM role - an honour shared with NZ First Winston Peters, who just relinquished it at the end of May. Luxon also ended up giving in on everything the minor parties wanted and more. For example, as Seymour revealed later, his party’s divisive, “disingenuous” Treaty Principles Bill wasn’t a red line - but Luxon gave it to him anyway.

And so with a trusty new title, and proving that “better for Kiwis” only means “better for me and my donors” (interfering in live police investigations for Epsom donor Philip Polkinghorne comes to mind), Seymour is now relishing his opportunity to take advantage of the baubles of NZ office.

Our new Deputy Prime Minister is in London, ostensibly for the prestigious Oxford University debate that he was defeated in.

(Incidentally, Willie Jackson won it last year).

This week, Seymour devoted his public service time to go on a right wing, libertarian tour around London.

First up is an “Enlightenment Evening” alongside Tory peer and senior Brexiteer “Lord” Daniel Hannan. Hannan is responsible for bangers such as Why is the British Left so allergic to British patriotism? And celebrating the “baubles” of his pro-Brexit referendum win:
